His Excellency Dr. Hilal Bin Ali Al Sabti:

-The orientation day is dedicated to acquainting you with the Oman Medical Specialty Board, it’s training and educational system and facilities, and to familiarize you with the roles and regulations.

- The (Covid 19) crisis is an example that has embodied the great responsibility that you are about to take in various   medical specializations.

- Scientific research is not mandatory to complete the requirements for obtaining a specialization medical degree. Rather, it is the soul of a passionate doctor, and the core of nation’s medical staff   advancement.

The Oman Medical Specialty Board’s has organized a welcoming activity via video communication this Sunday the 30th of August as part of the orientation day for 134 newly enrolled doctors in the  residency training programs for the 2020/2021 academic year and 144 doctor in the General Foundation Program . The orientation started with an introductory video presentation of the Oman Medical Specialty Board, followed by a welcoming speech by His Excellency Dr. Hilal bin Ali Al-Sabti, the Executive President.  In the speech HE said:

Dear doctors,,  

  I would have loved to deliver this speech to you while we are in one hall and in the same place, as I did in recent years when we meet the new residents and doctors, but the exceptional circumstances that you know have forbidden it. Here we meet you today via screens and various tablets. The (Coved 19) crisis is a vivid example that has embodied for you the size of the great responsibility that you are about to take in various medical specializations at all levels. As you see, great countries are competing to shed light on their efforts in scientific research, trying desperately to extract results and conclude facts. Scientific research is not mandatory to complete the requirements for obtaining a specialization medical degree. Rather, it is the soul of a passionate doctor, and the core of nation’s medical staff advancement.

Resident doctors of the Oman Medical Specialty Board,,

One is to seize opportunities for they don’t always happen, and here you are today joining the Oman Medical Specialty Board, so  do not save any effort, but do your utmost, accelerate your energies, unleash your potential, and you will be surprised of your creativity.

This orientation day is dedicated to acquaint you with the Oman Medical Specialty Board, it’s training and educational systems and facilities, and to familiarize you with the rules and regulations.  There will be time devoted to answering all your questions and inquiries. The academic faculty and trainers in your specializations will be with you to clarify your doubts  and answer you. I wish you best of luck and a successful educational journey.

Dr. Hood bin Abdullah Al-Abri - Vice President for Academic Affairs - gave a presentation including  an overview of graduate studies in the Board and the differences and similarities between university education in medical colleges and advanced education in medical specialties, as well as preparing doctors for advanced medical education through introducing them to the basics and methods used in advanced medical training, and motivating doctors to strive and excel in residency training programs

The orientation program included a speech on the General Foundation Program, which is one of the Board’s programs,   presented by Dr. Mustafa Al Hinai - the program’s supervisor - in which he welcomed the fourth batch of General Foundation Program doctors.

The program concluded with a discussion to answer the inquiries of doctors joining the Board and the training programs.

The induction program was for the first time completely electronic, as new doctor attended the orientation program through the Board’s electronic educational platform, which contains all educational materials and guidance for the doctors to acquaint themselves with the nature of   study and training in the Board, which allowed the doctor to attend and join the induction program remotely without the need to be present at the Board’s headquarter. The electronic program is presented in line with the preventive precautions directed by the Supreme Committee in charge Coronavirus (Covid 19). The electronic program will be available for the doctor permanently to be able to obtain all documents regarding policies, rules, and regulations needed during their training period. 

The induction program contained several lectures and workshops aiming at giving a comprehensive idea of ​​the training in the Board and the assessment and  evaluating methods of doctors during their training programs,  a short film  offering   general recommendations to doctors, and an introductory presentation about the Medical Simulation and Skills Development Center. Among the other topics discussed are the Board’s  program for scientific research methodology, the scholarship system for advanced training abroad,   as well as training doctors on using the electronic library and introducing its most important sources and related information databases, and the electronic management system for residents and doctors.

The orientation program activities continues to the second day (today Monday), as the newly enrolled doctors meet chairpersons and members of the educational committees, each according to their specialization, through visual communication or through  meeting with them at the Board’s headquarter, the Medical Simulation and Skills Development Center, and a number of training centers accredited by the Board, such as: Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Khawla Hospital, Al Nahda Hospital, Al Masarah Hospital and Royal Hospital   to provide more information and answer inquiries of new doctors in their fields of specialization.  In addition, the newly enrolled residents and Foundation Program doctors will attend an educational course on “Infection Prevention and Control Workshop” through the electronic educational platform, and the various workshops that will be presented successively, such as: Communication Skills, a workshop on Evidence-Based Medicine, and Medical Ethics and Professionalism Workshop.

The Electronic Educational Platform

The Oman Medical Specialty Board seeks, through the electronic educational platform, to contribute to the process of remote medical education and training, for the benefit of residents and trainees in the Board, doctors from outside the Board and other medical allied through lectures and integrated training courses using the distance education management system. Through the platform, doctors and health practitioners can access various educational resources and complete training activities and exercises in an interactive manner. Doctors can enroll in new training courses based on the requirements of their specialization such as scientific research methodology and communication skills.   These training courses have been converted to become fully electronic or integrated, so that the learner must finish the theoretical part of the course electronically before joining the practical training that takes place at the Medical Simulation and Skills Development Center.
