Oman Medical Specialty Board launched the new Surgical Foundation Program on Tuesday 29th of September 2020 to train the trainees of the OMSB Surgical residency programs, which are General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics and ENT. The launching ceremony was attended by 22 first year trainees.


The ceremony program began with a welcoming speech by His Excellency Dr. Hilal bin Ali Al Sabti - Executive President of the Oman  Medical Specialty Board,  in which he welcomed the doctors and encouraged them to work hard and  persevere in their educational journey, highlighting the importance of these programs in advancing their professional level and enhancing their skills and abilities.

Following the welcome, Dr. Ahmed Al-Jahwari - Director of the Orthopedic Program at the OMSB and Head of the Surgical Foundation Program  gave a speech introducing the program in which he stated that the program will extend for an academic year, through which academic events are organized on a weekly basis for four surgical specialties, namely: General Surgery, Orthopedics, ENT and Obstetrics and Gynecology. The program aims to train physicians in surgical principles and fundamentals for physicians in surgical specialties jointly, and to develop skills and knowledge related to surgery, leadership principles in surgery, communication skills with patients and colleagues, and teamwork spirit. This program ensures the formation of surgeons with professional competence that will positively affect patient safety and treatment methods.


Dr. Musa Al-Busaidi - Acting Assistant Director of the Medical Simulation and Skills Development Center, gave a presentation on the Medical Simulation and Skills Development Center and its services provided to trainee doctors. The Medical Simulation and Skills Development Center will host the surgical activities which will be supervised by a group of the best surgeons and trainers to ensure quality of the training content. The OMSB considered the current situation related to the Corona pandemic (Covid-19), thus modern techniques have been adopted, and the training protocol of the Medical Simulation and Skills Development Center will also be followed  to ensure the safety of trainees.


The Surgical Foundation Program provides an opportunity for physicians to train in basic surgical methods using simulation devices and surgical instruments similar to what a doctor deals with in hospitals. Training sessions will also be provided based on scenarios taken from   real surgical cases in hospitals to enhance the surgeon's immediate response skills, especially in operating rooms and emergency cases.


The program aims to refine the basic cognitive, scientific and behavioral skills required in surgical specialties by providing various lectures, workshops, courses and events at the Medical Simulation and Skills Development Center of the Board, as well as in some locally accredited training centers.


Dr. Badr Al-Alawi - Acting Head of the Skills Development Department - gave a visual presentation on the Electronic Educational Platform to introduce doctors to the platform and its services.  The platform aims to contribute to the process of distance medical education and training for the resident physicians in the OMSB, through lectures and integrated training courses using the distance education management system.


The curriculum presented in this program is based on international standards, and is followed in the most prestigious international surgeons training institutes. It will be conducted in weekly educational sessions using blended learning techniques, in addition to medical education methods based on medical simulation. The Oman Medical Specialty Board provides its services to the doctors who join to complete residency training. The OMSB aims to improve quality of health care provided to patients, and to enhance the ability and skills of doctors to ensure safe professional health practice through practical training with the latest systems of medical simulation in an educational environment that simulates the reality that the doctor deals with in hospitals.
