MISSION & VISION 

The OMSB Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program is committed to the integration of high academic and professional competency standards in a comprehensive curriculum of excellence. The program provides resident education in the Academic Core Curriculum and enhanced professional development through the General Competencies for residents.

Our goal is to educate the next generation of leaders in imaging science and its applications and to graduate well-qualified internationally recognized radiologists who will support patient care as effective members of the health-care team with strong radiology interpretive skills, knowledge of appropriate diagnostic radiology tools and cost effective resource utilization. They will be able to provide consultative services to referring physicians and other practitioners in support of quality patient care, demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and ethics, show a commitment to continuous education and demonstrate an awareness of the role of service to the profession and their community. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Learning objectives are established for the curriculum and include the following for each subspecialty area:

  1. A thorough understanding of the indications for examinations and familiarity with the principles and limitations of studies, including benefit and risk to the patient.
  2. A familiarity with the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and posttherapeutic findings which may be identified through general radiology examination.
  3. An understanding of technology and techniques of radiology.
  4. Learning skills needed for effective physician consultation and communications.
  5. Criteria for radiographic exposure and positioning and effective communication with radiologic technologists and other department personnel.
  6. Fluoroscopic techniques and its uses.
  7. Workup pathways with attention to quality outcomes for patient care and cost effective resource utilization.
  8. Professional communication with patients for both information gathering and for diminishing the burden of disease.
  9. Indications and contraindications of contrast studies, as well as the performance of these studies, risks and benefits for the patient and alternatives.
  10. Pathology covered in the academic curriculum will include the following categories: Congenital Diseases Infection Immunologic Diseases Neoplastic Diseases Metabolic Diseases Vascular Diseases and Cardiovascular Diseases Environmental Diseases and Physical Agents Trauma Operative Changes Irradiation and Post Therapeutic Changes Complications of Therapy Miscellaneous or Other Diseases

The program provides residents with experience and education in the following subspecialty areas of diagnostic radiology:

  • Emergency Radiology
  • Uroradiology
  • Ultrasound
  • Computed Axial Tomography
  • Chest Radiology (including cardiac imaging)
  • Gastrointestinal Radiology
  • Musculoskeletal Radiology
  • Pediatric Radiology
  • Neuroradiology (including neuroangiography, neuro CT, and neuro MRI)
  • Mammography
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology
  • Nuclear Medicine (including PET/CT)
  • Radiology Research o PACS, Voice Recognition, and basic information systems utilization
